Her History

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born on August 19, 1883, in a small village in France, into a humble family. She became an orphan at the age of six, living in an orphanage in the town of Auvergne with her brothers. She started working as a clerk in a fabric store, which led her to learn the art of sewing. She also worked as a cabaret singer and adopted the name Coco, from the song “Qui qu’a vu Coco”.

In 1910 he opened his first shop, a hat shop called “Chanel Modes”. After 10 years, Chanel was already an influential and recognized design that was inspired by men’s clothes. Created the Tailleur that consists of skirt and jacket, as in the following image:

In 1922 he created the perfume Chanel nº5. During World War II Chanel retired and settled in the Hotel Ritz Paris with its new partner, the German official Hans Gunther von Dincklage. After the liberation of France from Nazism she fled to Switzerland.

When he returned to Paris, he resumed his business, but Christian Dior had dominated the haute couture market with the “new look”. To rebound it created leather bags and a line of men’s perfume. In 1957 he won the Fashion Oscar for his spring collection.

She introduced herself in a cardigan, a black dress and pearls, which became a trademark of the Chanel style. Tailleur’s fame has expanded, even wearing the first American lady, Jackie Kennedy and appearing in major fashion magazines. At last, Coco Chanel had created an empire. And on January 10, 1971, he passed away at the Hotel Ritz Paris. His last collection was uniform for Olympic Airlines in 1969.

Currently

The brand has a large empire with billions of dollars in couture, clothes, bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, cosmetics and perfumes. Since 1983, Karl Lagerfeld is the creative director of the brand. The desing remains true to Coco’s, but with a touch of Lagerfeld.
